As part of their True Life series, MTV has broadcasted a one-hour documentary on Saudi youth last Monday. Even before it was aired, Resist the Power, Saudi Arabia has attracted big attention. Opinion wise, I am on the fence on this one. I have heard both sides of the argument and both sides have very valid arguments. However, the more I think about my limited experience here, I do believe there are more important issues to be addressed such as unemployment and education.

I only watched some part of that show. To be honest, I don’t agree with it, not because I’m supporting the other side, but because they’re not using facts, or let’s say they’re manipulating stereotypes and using them to their favor. For example, the Saudi young man who was dating a girl, showed the religious police as devils walking around with beards (which’s a false generalization). In addition, in Jeddah city, religious police are rarely seen according to many people I know who live there. Also, when the camera was showing what’s called “the daily life” of Jeddah people, it showed you all completely covered women only, and all of us know that this picture is not even true in Riyadh.
